Per figures released by Israel, at least 98 detainees from Palestine have died while detained beginning in October 2023. An advocacy organization located in Israel has reported that the actual number is almost certainly considerably larger, due to many of unaccounted for individuals originating in Gaza.

In May of this year, a defense forces registry following all militants in Gaza, a list of over 47,000 listed people, documented only 21 deaths in custody. At that time, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had perished in prison.

Detention Conditions

High-Profile Cases

Some deaths in custody have been widely reported, such as a middle-aged medical chief who perished in prison after a third of a year in custody.

A detainee held with the victim testified that he was led to the yard by correctional officers shortly before his death, clearly wounded and unclothed from the hips downward. His body has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Further inmates who perished in confinement by Israeli authorities are unidentified. Correctional authorities and military provided analysts with the number of fatalities in detention, and minimal additional information such as the location where they lost their lives, but not the detainees’ identities.

Recognition Difficulties

In 21 cases, mainly individuals from Gaza, researchers were unable to connect the limited information provided by officials to a fatality recorded by human rights groups, by means of testimony from freed prisoners or reporting in the press.

The detainees’ families could be unaware about their family members’ fatalities either, as Israel has created obstacles to monitor Palestinian individuals it is detaining.
